In this week’s video, Alec Torelli talks about his path to the finals of the 2008 WSOP Heads-up Championship and some strategies related to heads-up No-Limit Hold’em play.
Heads-up NL Hold’em is a very different game than any other style of NL and any other style that you will play in tournament play.

First, you need to realize that starting hand values change dramatically due to the fact it is just two of you at the table. You will want to expand your raising range dramatically and even the range that you will want to three-bet with. Some players will tend to defend their blinds more heads-up and you will want to adjust for this.

Next, since it is already difficult to flop hands, second and even third best hands can increase in value dramatically. Depending on the read you have on your opponent, you will want to value bet these hands with greater frequency than you would in any other form of NL Hold’em. Also, hands that have drawing power go up in value over other forms of NL.

Finally, you are going to be bluffing a lot more in this form of NL than you even realize. As such, you need to not only adjust your play to allow for more bluffs but you will want to analyze your opponent’s play to try and figure out spots where they may be bluffing and where they may actually have the goods and are value betting.

Torelli gives some great tips during the above video and gives some keen insight into his matches on his way to the heads-up finals. Listen closely to some of the thought process in his matches to pick up a few nuggets that will help you in your heads-up game. Just remember that heads-up NL is all about making constant adjustments and as Torelli will allude to, the players that can make adjustments the quickest are usually the players that win.
